Health Matters on Tuesday 7 May

Today, Tuesday 7 May after 11.00am, the regular Health Matters feature with Practice Nurse Janette Tiffoney of Renfrew Health Centre will provide up to date information on relevant health issues.

Today’s topics include bowel screening and breast cancer.  More information, contacts and links below:

Bowel cancer is a major public health problem in Scotland. The Scottish Bowel Screening Programme invites men and women aged between 50 and 74 to take part in screening every two years. Bowel screening aims to find cancer at an early stage when treatment is likely to be more effective. Bowel screening is the only screening programme where the test is completed at home.

The faecal immunochemical test (FIT) replaced the guaiac faecal occult blood test (gFOBt) as the test used in the Scottish Bowel Screening Programme in November 2017.

NHS Health Scotland works closely with Cancer Research UK and Bowel Cancer UK. Cancer Research UK have produced a Scottish Bowel Screening GP Good Practice guide (external website) to support primary care professionals using the test.

To support those with learning difficulties and their carers, Bowel Cancer UK have produced a learning disabilities and carers resource.

There is information about the bowel screening test and instructions on how to complete it. Information is available in other languages and Easy Read format.

About breast cancer

Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in the UK.

In 2011, just under 50,000 women were diagnosed with invasive breast cancer. Most women who get it (8 out of 10) are over 50, but younger women, and in rare cases, men, can also get breast cancer.

If it’s treated early enough, breast cancer can be prevented from spreading to other parts of the body.
